Abstract

Nepal being enlisted among the developing nations, computer education in our context may not seem as one of the vital needs at a glance but acknowledging the fact that the world is turning digital, this need cannot be denied totally. But since a large share of population lies under the poverty line, owning personal computers may only be possible in somewhat affluent society. A possible solution to it would be community learning centers where a number of PC's are kept and made accessible to the general public. But again the cost to acquire the hardware is pretty high. In this paper we discuss about how Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP) can help to solve this problem. Utilizing LTSP, we can use very low-end PCs and boot them via one powerful computer. Here we point out the prospects of LTSP in our context and how our society can benefit from it. We also show that not only LTSP is cheaper to implement initially but also costs lesser to maintain on the long run. We also discuss the overall aspects of our deployment of LTSP based lab in Lalmatiya, Dang. Finally we suggest that the LTSP model is not only suitable for developing country like Nepal, but also perhaps the best solution.
